Staff ProfileProfessor Norah Khadzini Olembo. - Executive Director Professor Norah Khadzini Olembo is the Executive Director of African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum (ABSF). She holds a Post Doctoral Degree in Molecular Biology from Courthould Institute (University of London) in the United Kingdom, a Post Graduate Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Masters Degree in Zoology from UoN, Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Zoology and Botany from the same University. She also holds an advanced level Certificate in Chemistry, Biology and Physics from Mount School in New York. Professor Olembo has also received professional certificate from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) training in Insect Growth, Development and Behavior, Insect Endocrinology from International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Kenya, Strategic Planning from Voluntary Agencies Development Assistance in Kenya (V.A.D.A) and Recombinant DNA techniques from Courthould Institute in the United Kingdom. Before her appointment at ABSF, Professor Olembo served as an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Nairobi. She also served as the Managing Director of Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI). She has also worked as the Director of the Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO) in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and chaired the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Nairobi. Prior to that, Professor Norah Olembo served as a consultant for Kenya Non-Governmental Organizations Committee for the 1995 United Nations End of Decade Women Conference. She has also been a Senior Lecturer and Graduate Research Assistant at the UoN. Professor Olembo has undertaken many assignments and published in scientific journals and proceedings. She is also the Chairperson, member and trustee in many public service organizations and societies in Kenya and other African countries. Mr. Lucas Sese.- Deputy Director Mr. Lucas Sese is the Deputy Director. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the university of Nairobi and Postgraduate Diploma in Soil Conservation from the same university. He also holds professional certificate in Plant Production and Protection and one in Irrigation, Drainage and Water Development.Mr. Sese is a retired civil servant. He has worked for the government of Kenya for 26 years. Previous to his retirement, he was the Chief Patent Examiner at Kenya Industrial property Institute (KIPI). He also served as the Deputy Director department of Technical Services at Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO). Mr. Sese was the Secretary General for Kenya National Federation of Cooperatives (KNFC) and an Assistant Commissioner for Cooperative Development, Ministry of Cooperatives. Prior to that, he was the Agricultural Extension Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Crop and Animal Production Department. He has also received other trainings in Intellectual Property from WIPO, JICA, KARI, WTO, KIRDI, and USAID. He has presented papers in workshops and trainings in Africa. He has also attended other WIPO diplomatic conferences, assemblies and ministerial meetings across the globe. Mr. Sese has been in the forefront in the development of the African Model Legislation for the Protection of Community, Farmers and Breeders Rights and Access to Biological Resources. He is a member of several organizations and chairs the sub committee on WTO. In 2001, he was awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) from the then President of Kenya, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, for his distinguished service to the Republic of Kenya. Dr Felix M’mboyi, PhD - Senior Programmes Officer Dr. Felix M’mboyi is the Senior Programmes Officer at ABSF and oversees the overall formulation and implementation of all biotechnology outreach programmes in the organization. He holds a PhD in Sustainable Development (Hawaii, USA), Master degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Egerton University in Kenya. He also possesses professional training in Management Focused Monitoring and Evaluation from the World Bank Institute-Washington and Computer Applications in Data Processing and Analysis and Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) from Michigan State University. He also possesses a Certificate as a Trainer of trainers from the Agricultural Resources centre in Kenya.Dr M’mboyi was recently also appointed as the Agriculture Sector Advisor at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kenya where he serves as the principal technical officer who advises on all issues related to the agricultural sector in Kenya. His role is in line with helping the Prime Minister in the coordination function for the Ministry of Agriculture.
Dr. M’mboyi previously worked as the Cooperative Development and Training Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. He has served as a Graduate Fellow at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Nairobi; and as a Research Scientist at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) where he headed the Socioeconomics section at the National Animal Husbandry Research Center (NAHRC).He has also previously worked as an Assistance Programmes Officer at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kenya; as a Research Fellow /Agricultural Economist under a USAID funded programme at the Tegemeo Institute of Agriculture Policy and Development, Egerton University; and as a Monitoring and Evaluation Programmes Officer at the Project Operational Department of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Kenya office, before taking up the position of a Visiting Research Fellow at Czech University of Agriculture, Institute of Tropics & Sub Tropical Agriculture in Central Europe. Dr. Felix M’mboyi has been involved in many other research and development activities and has written manuscripts on several topics in development, monitoring and evaluation. He also serves as a Honorary Director to several environmental and Developmental NGO’s operating in Kenya. Dr M’mboyi is a consultant in agriculture policy analysis, project and programme management, monitoring and evaluation, economic studies and cross country research. He is a member of various regional and international consulting firms where he serves as a consultant associate. In addition, he serves as a part time lecturer in several universities where he also supervises post graduate student research projects.
Dr. George Mamati holds a Doctorial degree in Genetics and Breeding from Zhejiang University in China. He also holds a Masters Degree in Plant Breeding from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi. He is a Senior Programme Associate/Biotechnologist and is principal scientist involved in editing technical reports, papers and manuscripts for the Agricultural Biotechnology Network in Africa. He also acts as a peer review scientist.Dr. Mamati is currently a lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Prior to his appointment, he served as a part time lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Kenyatta University and at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Botany Department. Dr. Mamati has also served at Tea Research Foundation of Kenya as a Plant Breeder Research Officer, as an Agricultural Officer in the Ministry Of Agriculture and as Programme Assistant for Biotechnology and Public Policy at the Africa Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS). Dr. George Mamati has published several books, newsletters and journals on Food Science.
Dr. Nyende possesses a B.Sc. (Agriculture) from the Nairobi University in Kenya, a M.Sc. (Plant breeding and Genetics) from the Nairobi University in Kenya and a Doctorate (Agricultural Science) from Kiel University in Germany.He serves as a Consultant with ABSF and is involved in updating ABSF with current research in Biotechnology with respect to Agriculture and advisory on ongoing debate over benefits of GM crops and the biosafety bill. Also involved in writing proposals. He is a principal person in biotechnology capacity building in the organization. He is a Lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, in the botany and horticulture departments (both undergraduate and post graduate) in the field of plant breeding, biotechnology, molecular biology and genetics. and agronomy. He also serves as the Director of the Institute of Biotechnology at the university. Main research interest is to develop in-vitro propagation protocols, clean healthy vegetative/synthetic seeds, and cryo-storage techniques of root crops and important native crops of Africa. Also involved in the genetic characterization of sweet potato cultivars and macadamia fruits.
Previously, he has served as a Civil servant in the Cartography Department. Ministry of Finance and Economy; Research Assistant - Pigeonpea Improvement Project-crop science department: Nairobi University; Energy Conservation Officer- Eukawa Technical Services, Kiambu; Self-employed: Agricultural consultation services to flower and horticultural farmers in Kenya; Lecturer (Part-time): Horticulture/Botany departments, Jomo Kenyatta University for Agriculture and Technology; Research Fellow- Institute for Crops and Grassland sciences, Federal Agricultural Research centre (FAL) Braunschweig, Germany ;Lecturer: Horticulture department-JKUAT - Senior Lecturer - Horticulture department and as a Director Institute for Biotechnology Research (JKUAT). He is also an In Country Co-supervisor: University of Kwazulu-Natal.
Dr Mugiira holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Molecular Plant Virology from Zhejiang University, China, a Master of Science, Plant Pathology from Egerton University, Kenya and a Bachelor of Education Science from Egerton University, Kenya.Dr Mugiira serves a senior programme associate at ABSF and advises on various technical issues related to plant transformations, nature of genetically modified crops, tissue culture and moleculer marker technology. He is instrumental in preparing technical briefs for use in forums including conferences, workshops and seminars. He is a principal person in biotechnology capacity building in the organization. Dr. Roy B. Mugiira is a molecular plant virologist having studied the molecular diagnosis of plant viral infections based on the alignment of their genomic DNA sequences and gained practical experience in the molecular cloning of viral DNA genomes into vectors for the genetic transformation of plants and development into gene silencing vectors for application as reverse genetics tools in functional genomics. Currently Dr. Mugiira is working as a Principal Research Officer in the Directorate of Research Development, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MoHEST) of the Republic of Kenya. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum/Agricultural Biotechnology Network in Africa (ABSF/ABNETA) and chairs the planning sub-committee for the forth coming 1st All Africa Congress on Biotechnology sponsored by ABSF, the African Union (AU) economic commission and other partners. Previously Dr. Mugiira worked as a Senior Science Secretary for the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), a semi-autonomous Government Agency under MoHEST. At the NCST, Dr. Mugiira was responsible for articulating technical issues that inform policy directions in relation to science, technology and innovation generally and Biotechnology/Biosafety specifically. He is the official contact person and representative of the Ministry in the Executive Stakeholders Forum of the Plant Resources of Tropical Africa (PROTA) network. Dr Mugiira is an associate of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotechnology Applications (ISAAA). Dr. Mugiira is an assistant Co-Principal Investigator for the East African Regional Programme and Research Network for Biotechnology, Biosafety and Biotechnology Policy Development (BIO-EARN), a joint effort to empower four Eastern Africa countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to meet the challenges of modern biotechnology and assist them in realizing its potential under local conditions.
Mr.Oyugi is a graduate of University of Nairobi and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. He is currently pursuing his Master of Science degree in Agriculture and Applied Economics at the University of Nairobi. He has received other professional trainings in computer and Accounting from Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB).Mr. Kennedy Oyugi is a Deputy Programme Officer and assists the Senior Programmes Officer in developing projects and project proposals for implementation. He also assists in the development of the annual workplan and the strategic plan of the organization amongst other technical roles. Mr.Oyugi has worked at Kenya Agriculture Commodity Exchange (KACE) as a Marketing Information Point Manager and as a Research Assistant at the National NGO Coordinating Committee on Desertification-Kenya (NCCD-K). He founded the Kisii Agricultural Stakeholders Consortium and is a member of several other organizations. He has also published two reports on agriculture in Kenya.

Before joining ABSF, Leah has also worked as an intern at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute Biotechnology Centre (KARI) in Nairobi. Phylister Juma ojika.- Programme Officer: Agriculture Technology Transfer Phylister a Programme Officer: Agriculture Technology Transfer. She is a graduate of the Kenya Polytechnic University College, Nairobi Kenya with a Diploma in Applied Biology. Prior to her appointment at ABSF, she was a quality control assistant at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) in Nairobi Kenya, in charge of the cereals section.Phylister has a wealth of experience in biological applications especially in agricultural biotechnology and field based applications. She will be in charge of capacity building of community and rural development groups including CBOs, NGOs and other farmers groups. She will also be responsible for transferring tissue culture biotechnology knowledge to farmers and educating them on the latest information and commencement dates for commercialization of transgenic crops in the country. He is a graduate of Kabarak University, Nakuru Kenya and holds a Bachelors of Science degree in computer science. Before joining ABSF, Adolphus has also worked as an intern at the Access Kenya Ltd in Nairobi. Adolphus has interests in networks design, implementation, security and web technology. Christine Auma Nambiro.- Finance and Administration Officer Mrs. Christine Nambiro is the Programmes Accountant and also serves as the Administration Officer in charge of human resources for the organization. She is a graduate of University of Nairobi with a Masters of Business Administration Degree in Finance. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Mrs. Nambiro has also received professional training in Accounting from Kenya Accountants and Secretaries Board (KASNEB). She is well vast with computers, SAGE and QuickBooks.Mrs. Nambiro has worked as a Consulting Accounts Manager for Environmental Resources Management Centre for Sustainable Development (ERMCSD), in the Finance Department at Symphony Limited, Nation Media Group as the Courier Sales Executive and as the Printing Sales Executive. Nambiro has also served as the Administration Assistant for the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF), Finance and Administration Officer for Uhandisi Limited and as Accounts Assistant for Utamaduni Limited.
Miss Moragwa is a graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. and also holds a Master of Science Degree in Public Health from Moi University in Kenya. She has also undergone a computer training course at Breldan College in Nairobi, Kenya.Oirere has interests primarily in Medical Biotechnology and other biotechnologies including agricultural biotechnology
Jenniffer Wamaitha Mwai- Programme Officer, Regional Networks Jenniffer is a Biotechnology graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture (JKUAT). She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Plant Biotechnology. Jenniffer is also trained in Computer Applications from Elite College Nyahururu, Kenya.Jeniffer serves as a programme officer in charge of the Agricultural Biotechnology Network in Africa (ABNETA) where she liaises with other regional and international biotechnology and agriculture networks involved in technology development and transfer. Before joining ABSF, Jennifer has been working with various organizations in different capacities. She was part of the team that set up the laboratory at EM Technologies and performed Microbial analysis of EM products. She has also worked as an intern at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute Biotechnology Centre (KARI) in Nairobi. Mwai also took part in guiding and counseling and Aids awareness activities through JKUAT education. Jenniffer has interests in Plant Biotechnology including Tissue Culture and Plant Transformations
Mr Ombaka is a graduate of the University of Nairobi in - Bachelor of Science Agriculture. He is also pursuing his Master of Science Degree in plant Breeding at the University of Nairobi. Since leaving the university, he has been working with various organizations in different capacities. Before joining ABSF, he served as a Field Research Supervisor with the Stead man Group where he was involved in various research activities.
Mr. Ombaka has also worked for Mumias Out-growers Company LTD as a Zone supervisor in the sugarcane belt of western Kenya. He was actively involved in farmer-extension activities including capacity building-training and in the transfer of technology to cane growing farmers through collaboration with the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. Joseph has also worked with Tegemeo Institute of Agriculture Policy and Development (under USAID funding) where he was a Research Assistant involved in Collecting and recording data on Agricultural production, inputs use, marketing and other business enterprises as sources of income. Earlier, Joseph worked as a Research Assistant with the National NGO Coordinating Committee on Desertification - Kenya (NCCD-K), an affiliate organization that works closely with UNEP and UNDP in development management. He was involved in ;Implementation of Arid Semi Arid Land (ASALs) Projects in selected dry districts of Kenya; Coordinating dry land projects with affiliated NGOs, CBOs and other civil societies and in undertaking research surveys on pastoralists communities in Arid and Semi Arid land (ASALs).
Miss Ogola Dinah Atieno. - Communications Officer Miss Dinah Ogola is the Communications Assistant. She is a graduate of Daystar University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications She has also received other professional training in Environmental Journalism and Communications, HIV/AIDS, Peer Counseling and Life Skills.Miss Ogola has served at Sayare media as a news collector and editor. She has also worked at St. Paul’s ACK Church as a secretary and at Machakos Boys High School as a Peer Educator on HIV/AIDS. She is currently a volunteer writer for The Anglican Newsletter. Mrs. Rosemary Adoyo is the Executive Secretary. She has professional training in Secretarial Work from Visions Institute of Professional Studies. She has also received other trainings in Computer studies from Computer Society of Kenya.
Miss Rechar is a communications Intern. She holds a Diploma in Communications from the Kenya Institute of Business and Technology in Eldoret, Kenya. She also holds a Certificate in Computer Training from Dawn to Dusk College in Eldoret, Kenya.
