INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME AT ABSF/ABNETA

The African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum (ABSF) and the Agricultural Biotechnology Network for Africa (ABNETA) are pleased to announce that beginning the year 2006, a limited number of national and international internships in Biotechnology, Biometrics, Information Technology, Agriculture Policy, and Communications and  Public Relations will be available at the organization’s Head Offices in Nairobi, Kenya.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Due to the large number of applicants and the limited number of places available per period, applicants are strongly advised to note the following minimum eligibility criteria for an Internship at ABSF/ABNETA administered by the Staff Development & Training Unit. If all of the requirements are not met, your application will not be processed.

The Applicant MUST:
  1. Be currently enrolled in a fourth year of under-graduate (BA/BSc.) and in his/her last study semester or in a graduate (Masters) research programme, and will continue to be enrolled during the period of the internship and after. Applicants who have just completed their undergraduate and graduate studies and are not currently employed will also be considered.
  2. (NB: applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least three years of university studies – request for further eligibility information)
  3. Submit an endorsement from the Nominating/Sponsoring Institution. (see application form)
  4. Be willing to intern on a full-time basis spending five days a week for a period of not less than THREE MONTHS and not exceeding SIX MONTHS.
Send a letter of endorsement from his/her educational institution, attesting to the fact that he/she is currently a registered student and will continue to be enrolled for the envisaged period of the internship. A letter from any one of the following personnel is suggested:
  • Dean of Students or dean of faculty
  • Registrar
  • Placement officer
Please ensure that an official letterhead or an official seal is used for the endorsement letter. This endorsement should be attached to the application. Candidates are advised that their application forms will not be processed without proper and adequate endorsement.

The Staff Training and Development Unit (SDTU) runs the internship programme which services offices at:
  1. Agricultural Biotechnology Network for Africa - ABNETA
  2. African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum - ABSF
The objectives of the internship programme are:
  • To provide students with important practical experience which complements their field of study, which at the same time will be of benefit to the ABSF/ABNETA offices to which the intern is assigned.
  • To promote among the students a better understanding of major poverty problems confronting the world and to give them an insight into how the ABSF/ABNETA attempts to find solutions to these problems through biotechnology.
  • To expose the students to ABSF/ABNETA and its policies and programmes and have them become biotechnology ambassadors of good will.
  • To enable students from all parts of the world to exchange information during and after the internship so as to appreciate cultural diversity amongst different peoples and have them become ambassadors of poverty eradication and good will.
ABSF/ABNETA POLICY FOR INTERNSHIPS
  1. Interns will be trained through a technically crafted schedule that will ensure they understand the particular/specific and general operations of the organization (in line with their areas of academic specialization).
  2. Interns are not full time employees of the organization and are not eligible to receive salaries and other privileges that full time employees are entitled to. (However, the organization reserves the right to reward interns in the way that is deemed beneficial to both parties).

  7. Interns will be required to write a monthly report (to the programme officer) of their activities, challenges and progress in acquiring practical skills and knowledge of what they were set to achieve.
  8. Internship programme will be coordinated by the ABSF/ABNETA programme officer (with support from other section heads of the organization)
